I answered the phone.
“Hey, Lin? What's up? You OK?”
There was a sound on the other end, then silence. I heard her swallow before she tried again.
“Can I see you?”
“Sure. Right now?”
I tried to sound hopeful. It was 1 AM, and I couldn't tell what state Lin was in or how badly she needed me. But I wanted her to know I was there if she did.
“If you can?” she said.
“Errr… There's a twenty-four-hour diner on Second near Hunter. Meet me there?”
“Sure, I know it. How far away are you?”
“Be there in thirty minutes? That work for you?”
“Sure… Thank you.”
She hung up.
